COLOR in NATURE at the CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDENS, GLENCOE
ART256110 - Color in Nature 3/5/10 - 4/9/10
Delve into the complex and exciting colors found in nature's wealth of plants, flowers, and fruits. Discover the science behind how color is created and observed; how plants utilize color, and how to analyze nature's colors to move your botanical illustrations and art into a richer dimension. Using water based paints and colored pencils, students will move through exercises designed to unlock these complexities. A review of color theory will be presented, as well as demonstration and visual examples.

CRITIQUE CLASS TUESDAY MARCH 23rd
The monthly critique class is designed for students working independently in various mediums (including pastel, gouache, acrylic and oil paints) who wish to receive feedback, support and inspiration in a comfortable group studio setting. We will critique finished works and works in progress. Students will then have studio time to work and receive individual instruction. Our studio is located at 1402 Greenleaf in a working artists' studio outfitted with easels, work tables, wash-up sinks, and daylight balanced lighting. Free on-street parking is available. The fee for each class is $47. Please let me know if you have any questions. Snacks always welcome!

DRAWING on the RIGHT SIDE of the BRAIN: Create Drawings with New Perceptions at the Infinity Foundation
Drawing ability, for many, seems only possible with a certain level of talent. However, when you access the right side of the brain, the seat of your creativity, you unblock your drawing abilities. Discover the connections between how you think, what you see, and how to draw. Through a series of guided exercises, you will open your perceptions to see the world around you with an artist’s eye. This class is for both the beginning and more practiced artist who would like to clarify and simplify the approach of capturing creative expression on paper. You will create several small drawings using the right side of your brain. Materials required are a soft lead pencil, eraser, and drawing paper at least 18” X 24” inches.

A Peninsula School of Art Studio Intensive provides a special time and place to dedicate yourself to bringing your work to the next level, while working within a collaborative community of like-minded artists. Artistic transformation is facilitated by focusing on process rather than product. Design your personalized artmaking space, surrounding yourself with the materials and inspirational pictures, sketches, quotes, color swatches that set the stage for growth. Throughout, you may invite your fellow artists to respond to your work, or you may move ahead privately.
Monday and Tuesday during the second week, individual private critiques will be scheduled with master artist, Nina Weiss, followed by a group discussion of the critique experience. Students are also encouraged to add to a communal resource library of inspirational materials such as art biographies, writings, reading lists, web sites, DVDs, quotes, reproductions of artworks, etc.

COLOR IN THE WINTER LANDSDAPE at the EVANSTON ART CENTER
This winter, take a look at the beautiful landscapes around you! In this class, students will explore painting techniques that reveal color in the Winter Landscape. Under-painting, glazing, broken-brushstroke, and a review of color theory will help guide the student to rich and vibrant winter landscapes. Composition, gesture, and other practices crucial to landscape painting will be reviewed. Examples from art history will be presented. LANDSCAPE: DRAWING into PAINTING Northshore Art League, Winnetka
NEW! 11 WEEK WINTER SESSION LANDSCAPE CLASS in the BEAUTIFUL NORTHSHORE ART LEAGUE STUDIOS! This course for students of all levels offers an exploration of landscape in painting and drawing. Students will learn to extract and refine their vision of the landscape using sketches and personal landscape photography as resource material. Emphasis on composition, color, and technique will strengthen the student's ability to represent the landscape around them. Students will begin with black & white mediums to study composition, value and gesture. Color and color theory review will be added as students grow confident with their subject matter. Students will work in the color medium of their choice. An historical overview of landscape drawing and painting will be presented. NAKED COLOR WORKSHOP NORTHSHORE ART LEAGUE, Winnetka
Strip away the mysteries of color. In this intensive workshop, students will learn how to identify and implement color schemes for use in various art practices. The scientific background, physiological causes, and psychological effects of color will be discussed. Study the relationships of color on using colored paper and water-based paints. PASTEL TECHNIQUE and PAINTING THE MAINE LANDSCAPE: SUMMER WORKSHOPS in COREA, MAINE.
Nationally acclaimed artist Nina Weiss is returning to Corea, Maine June 22 -25 to conduct two workshops. This is the fifth year that Nina, a 2005 Acadia National Park Artist In Residence, will visit Corea to offer workshops. June 22-23 is "Mastering Pastels and the Maine Landscape". This two day, 10 hour, workshop will focus on techniques pioneered by Degas, Chardin and Cassat. Using chalk pastels, students will perfect layering techniques and application skills to create optical mixtures, achieve depth and realize brilliant effects. Special emphasis will be placed on exploring color in nature, focusing on the varied tones and hues that combine, contrast and compliment to give coastal Maine its distinct appearance. Students will create and critique pastel works on location, capturing the natural landscapes and seascapes of Corea, Maine. Workshop is $160 and limited to 12 students. June 24 -25 10:00 - 3:00 Nina will offer an intensive two-day workshop: Capturing Color in the Maine Landscape. Students will work plein-aire studying the inspirational landscapes around the peaceful harbor town of Corea. Emphasis of this workshop will be on rendering basic forms of the landscape, using line and gesture, and expanding the use of color in landscapes. Students will begin with compositional sketches and color studies and progress to works in the color medium of their choice. A review of color theory and color in nature and the landscape will begin this intensive workshop. Lunch will be on location and participants should plan accordingly. Workshop is $160 and limited to 12 students.

ITALIAN LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP WITH NINA WEISS At the Monastero SS. Annunziata, Todi, and La Torretta, Casperia. Study, paint and draw the breathtaking landscape surrounding the medieval hill town of Todi, in Umbria. Todi is a sophisticated town of gothic palazzi, narrow winding streets, and a magnificent central piazza. The town is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and sunflower fields. Casperia, an hour south of Todi in the Lazio region, nestled in the beautiful Sabine hills, offers a striking landscape, in a tiny, medieval, traffic free town of winding cobblestone streets. Working on site, students will learn to extract their visions from this inspirational landscape, working with pastel, gouache, charcoal, and pencil. In Todi, students will be housed and take meals in a newly rennovated monestary. La Torretta in Casperia is a rennovated 15th century villa with stunning views from all rooms.
